At Christmas time in 1989 Romania's "Goliath" was slain. One of the most brutal and cruel dictators in history, Nicolae Ceausescu was removed and executed after a swift revolution, which began out of the boldness and faith of a lowly pastor in western Romania.
Sadly, the changes since 1989 have made little difference to a large section of the Romanian population. High levels of poverty and misery still remain. Inflation has, at times reached runaway levels and although the wide range of goods now available in in the shops is now virtually the same as in the west, most items are way beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Unemployment is high and average incomes are about the equivalent of £80 per month. Salary levels vary little between non-skilled and highly skilled people. This has led to a "brain drain" and a huge increase in economic migration from Romania. It is estimated that 1 in 7 ( 3 million) people have already left Romania to look for work, and this is set to increase even further upon
entry into the EU in January 2007. A "black economy" and corruption at all levels are widespread. Benefits for the unemployed, sick and retired are extremely low. Pensions are meagre and many get nothing at all. State funds are limited, with massive shortages in health, welfare and education. There is an urgent need for business investment in Romania, but there is
very little capital available from within.
This is a grim picture of a beautiful country, whose suffering continues even after the hopes and joy of Christmas 1989.
